How to Apply for Finnish Citizenship Abroad?

Regulations on Finnish nationality are stated in the Finnish Constitution. The new Nationality Act came into effect on 1 June 2003 replacing the 1968 Nationality Act.

The key issues in the new act are accepting multiple citizenship and preventing statelessness.

Application of the new and old nationality act

The new act has been and will be applied now that it has come into effect, but in some cases, however, the regulations of the old act can still be applied.

Former Finnish citizens and former Finnish citizens' and present Finnish citizens' children and their children as co-applicants, as well as certain other groups, may acquire Finnish citizenship by declaration, but only within five years (1 June 2003 - 31 May 2008) of the introduction of the new act.
